Toilet Training Your First Puppy in Singapore

This is a report on how an owner house-train his female cocker spaniel, living in his house, for the past 6 weeks. She is 20 months old at the time of writing.

FIRST WEEK.
Kitchen and living area. Commercial urine spray onto newspapers in the kitchen. She peed on newspapers sometimes. Pooped anywhere.

SECOND WEEK.
The puppy has a room on level 2 for sleeping. She would go downstairs to the toilet to pee. A few areas in the living area would also be soiled. Seldom pee and poop upstairs.

SIXTH WEEK.
Able to hold urine overnight. Rushed to the garden in the morning to eliminate. If inside the house, will eliminate in a few areas in the living area.

Never paper-trained. Must mop the living area (toilet area) with Dettol.

No choice but to shut her inside the bathroom and shut the door when the owner works and after she eliminated in the garden after breakfast. The worry is that the puppy was dirty when the owner came home, stepping on stools and urine.

Not allowed into the garden unsupervised because she chewed everything.

SUGGESTIONS

1. A baby gate at the bathroom door so that the puppy will not feel isolated.
2. Newspapers 100%. Urine smell.
Or just the tiled floor of the bathroom as her toilet and towel as sleeping area during daytime.
3. Vinegar:water 1:2 to neutralise living areas.
4. If the puppy can hold the urine, wait for owner to come home to let her out into the garden. But this could be 12 hours later as owner works long hours.

FEEDBACK. The owner may provide feedback later.
