Hello Dr Sing
I have a similar problem as Julia.
My new adopted 2 yr old Cockapoo will not poop and pee in our backyard.
But he does it in others laws and yards and in bushy shrubby places .
I have tried putting his poop in our yard but he still wont go.
From today I have stopped walking himand taking him and try to exercise him only in our yard.He has not gone all day from morning.
How could I train him to eliminate in our yard.
Any advice and tips greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

I have just returned from Siem Reap, Cambodia and read your posting now.
My reply is as follows:

1. Most dogs will prefer to poop away from the den (backyard) as they want their den to be clean. This is what your Cockapoo is doing.

2. By not permitting him to go out, he will learn to eliminate in your backyard after some time.

3. If you know the timing of his elimination, bring him to a corner of your backyard with the same smell of grass and poop from the outside lawns, shrubby areas.

Give a firm command "Poop here". When he does poop, give him a treat and plenty of praises like "Good Boy!".

4. Some dogs prefer playtime rather than food treats as a reward. Therefore you need to know what your dog's "hot buttons" are.

5. Repeat, persevere every half an hour if there is no elimination. This may take a week or two of daily positive reinforcement training.

6. Pooping is usually after a meal and therefore you may be able to get the timing correct. Patience and perseverance are keys to success.

7. Let me know when you are successful.
