3. The driveway - puppy rushes to it first thing in the morning
Saturday July 31, 2005
A baby-boomer generation couple. 4-month-old black Schnauzer came in for 3rd vaccination. "Not fully paper-trained," the husband sighed when I enquired about toilet training. "He rushes out to the car driveway in the morning to pee and pass motion."
COMMENT
Singapore's terrace or townhouse layout. Driveway sufficient for one car. A small plot of garden on one side. In this case, only front quarter of the garden is grass. I presume the 3/4 is tiled.
The puppy is always attracted by urine smell. In this case, he does not soil the indoors. That is great. The problem is that the owner needs to park his car in the driveway. By rushing out, the puppy can control himself overnight.
SOLUTION.
Shift the toilet gradually to the grass patch which is 45 degrees to the toilet area on the driveway. How to do it?
1. I suggested soiling the adjacent area of the driveway, using newspapers placed over the urine and then placing over the enlarged adjacent area.
2. Put vinegar + water (1 part vinegar + 3 parts water) in a spray bottle to spray 50% of the present toilet area. Soil the adjacent area 50% and closer to the grass patch. The vinegar neutralises the ammonia odour. Over time, the toilet area is relocated to the grass patch.
3. Theory is good. But troublesome.
4. The wife suggested using the mop to soil the adjacent area. Now, that is a brilliant solution. I suggested using a new mop with vinegar to neutralise the older area.
5. Seems an excellent solution. The owners will feedback to me one month later. They seldom do. I must make a note to follow up.
COMMENTS ON COLOUR
The black Schnauzer does not look black enough. Will he grow up to be salt and pepper? He has some brown hairs. Owners do not mind.
