24. The Spitz owner diligently does online toilet-training research

Toilet Training Your First Puppy in Singapore

"The Spitz was paper-trained in 3 days?" I was incredulous when the twenty-something years old trim and fair lady working for an airline told me about her success story. The Spitz looked as trim as she is. Thin as a rake seems to be the in-thing for the younger generation and singles.

This Spitz commanded attention from groomers and everybody including me. He seems to be a natural champion Spitz. Most important, he had clear eyes. No tear staining. The only blemish were 2 stained front paws due to licking as a home-alone dog.

What were her secrets of success? She had knowledge by reading up and researching on the internet and applied the knowledge effectively by taking 3 days to toilet-train the spitz puppy full-time.

"Did you sleep with him?" I asked. A professional question. She understood what I meant. There were success stories of spending 24 hours with the new puppy. Every time the puppy wakes up or makes noises wanting to go to the toilet, bring him to the toilet even if it meant having to sleep next to the puppy for the first few days.

Now, the Spitz is 14 months old and his front paw stains had faded due to the fact that he has a companion, a new Golden Retriever puppy imported from Australia. The Spitz sprayed urine on my Surgery's door. That is normal for some male dogs. "But he mounts the Golden Retriever," the young lady said.

"Does he go to the same urine spot as the Spitz?" I asked. New puppies adopt the same practices as the older dog in most cases.

"No," she said. "The Spitz would not permit him to be in this toilet area."I put the 2nd piece of newspaper (with urine) onto another area and the Golden Retriever puppy used that area.

Watch for signs of the puppy wanting to urinate (sniffing, circling). Commands like "pee here" and praises seem to be the key to success too.

It was a great success story. Maybe the Spitz needs to be trained not to mount on the new puppy? If not, he may need to be neutered and a loss of good genetic material though I doubt he will be used for breeding.
