4. Toilet training the Siberian Husky in an apartment
Toilet training the Siberian Husky in an apartment
Around 80% of Singaporeans live in apartments. I often wonder how the larger breeds like the Siberian Husky gets toilet trained. The following success case from a young couple is extremely interesting for new puppy owners and for me.
I saw the 3-month-old Siberian Husky when it came for the 3rd vaccination. The picture explains how they toilet-train the beautiful husky.
Here are some pointers from the owners:
1. Female Siberian Husky. Bought a 3 feet x 3 feet playpen (4 fences). 1 fence has a door.
2. First 5 days, confined puppy to the playpen. After 7 days, she knows she must go to the play pen to go to the toilet area.
3. First 2 days, the puppy sleeps in the owner's bedroom. The puppy sleeps in its own play pen.
4. On the 3rd night, she was free to roam around the apartment at night. But in the day-time, confined to the playpen.
(This freedom to roam may led to many accidents. Some owners have a down light as the puppy cannot see the apartment in the dark. Some leave the door open a bit so that there is some light for the puppy. Some owners also place newspapers outside the bedroom door so that the puppy has access to the toilet area and be paper trained fast).
5. Vingear 1 part to Water 4 parts. Spray and clean thoroughly the tiles soiled when the puppy has "accidents". Bring the puppy back to the playpen immediately.
6. Close supervision. Parents involved. If see signs of sniffing, circling, carry swiftly into the playpen.
7. Change soiled newspapers immediately. The puppy disliked such dirty toilet areas. lst night. owner woke up 4 - 5 times to change soiled newspapers. When the puppy whines, it wanted the papers changed. The puppy was sleeping in the bedroom and so was not whining for company.
By giving the puppy clean newspapers (toilet area), it encourages her to use the papers. So, she was successfully paper-trained in less than 14 days.
8. 1 week to paper train. Praise when she goes to the playpen to do her business.
INTERESTING PRACTICES BY NEW PUPPY OWNERS & PUPPY SELLERS IN SINGAPORE.
1. UNBALANCED DIET FOR PUPPIES.
The puppy had diarrhoea after purchase. After surfing and getting advices from the Husky Club, the couple switched to feeding rice and minced meat. The diarrhoea stopped. Therefore, the couple maintained this diet. I advised the couple not to continue feeding just rice + minced meat + carrots given for initial diarrhoea. To convert to premium puppy food unless they know how to create a balanced diet using home-cooked food, vitamin and mineral supplements. The puppy needs a high protein diet and premium puppy food usually supply most of its requirements. So why take the risk in feeding home-cooked food? In any case, I usually advise 90% premium puppy food and 10% home-cooked food and/or treats if the owner enjoy giving home-cooked food.
2. PUPPY DIARRHOEA
Many puppies get diarrhoea after purchase as they go into a new environment and are managed differently. Some passes spots of red blood in the stools. Others have smelly blood and vomit several times.
It is best to consult your veterinarian rather than do self-treatment or get some over the counter medication from the pet shop.
3. UNDER-AGED HUSKY IMPORTED TO SINGAPORE?
Was puppy imported under 3 months of age owing to greater demand? Some huskies are smaller in size, I told the widely read couple. Permanent canines erupt at 6-7 months old. May be used as a guide to aging of this puppy. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority has regulated that puppies can only be imported at 3 months of age. Obviously, the importer is at a great competitive disadvantage as local bred puppies look so much cuter at 2 months of age when they are sold. Such puppies fetch a higher price and are in greater demand.
