5. Using a larger playpen for the small Scottish Terrier

A larger play pen for the Scottish Terrier.

Most small breed puppy owners buy the 3 feet by 2 feet play-pen as recommended by the pet shop operator. This is a common recommendation.

For the Scottish Terrier owner, he bought 6 feet by 3 feet or around that dimensions. This space is meant for larger breeds like the Golden Retriever. He places one page of the Straits Times newspaper at one corner (33% of the confined area) and the puppy knew that the paper was the toilet area. It sleeps and eats at the other 2/3 area.

It was successfully trained within 14 days. Somebody is at home to monitor and train the puppy. Probably mum. I am still trying to get a picture of the housing used but so far, no response.

The picture of the Scottish Terrier, a hyperacitve dynamo is shown below.

INTERESTING POINTS

1. This Scottish Terrier has been imported from Australia and sold within 2 days by the pet shop. Such breeds are extremely rare in Singapore.

2. With very close monitoring, the puppy was encouraged and praised when it does the correct thing. It had a clean area to sleep and knew what the newspaper was for.

3. The dual nozzle water bottle was useful as the puppy need not go back to the play pen to drink water when it is outside (in the living area) with the two young kids.

4. My comment is that the playpen should be open or has a door so that the puppy can go to the papers when it needs to go to the toilet. Alternatively, place papers outside the play pen when the puppy is out.

5. This puppy is so intelligent that it will not chew on the kid's toys. It tried to lift toys out of the toy box. Once the kids screamed, it does not do it anymore. It licks the children's toys but never chew them. It chews its own chew toys.

6. It waits for the owner to come home. Once, the owner came home late. When it was told, "go to sleep now," it was sound asleep when the owner came out from the bathroom. Its intelligence was hard to believe but true.

I hope to get more details. At least I managed to capture one picture out of many as it is very difficult to photograph a black moving puppy. The owner has difficulties too.
