31. Is this a case of submissive urination or lower urinary tract infection?
Toilet Training Your First Puppy in Singapore
She was leash-trained so that she would be restricted to a small kitchen area with newspapers. Her leash would be tied to the window grill. Spanking was used to train her, I believed although I did not go into details.
8/10 times the adopted puppy from Jurong Island would go to the newspapers in the kitchen to do her business. But she would pass stools in her two favoured spots - between the living room and dining room and the bathroom.
The owners were not complaining. I forgot to ask them whether they thought of neutralising the smell on the favoured spots with vinegar:water 1:3 or some commercial urine odour removal from the pet shop.
Spanking is frowned upon by dog lovers as they believe that the puppy will develop undesirable behaviours like aggression, biting owners or be frightened of the owners. Well, light spanking seemed to have worked for this puppy that is well loved by the owners. Usually, cross breds don't get adopted nor do they get vaccinated. So far, this is about the rare one I encounter in my Surgery.
It seems that cross-breds are an extinct species in a highly urbanised Singapore in 2005. I have been trying to find one for a friend who just wants a cross breed as she believes they make excellent guard dogs. I scour the industrial parks and can't believe that they are so few of them and they number probably a handful at any one time.
So, it was a pleasure to see this family looking after her very well. As for drinking urine, she did have a vaginal infection. Yellow thick pus clogged her vulva area. As for dribbling urine on greeting the owner coming home from work the past few days, this could be due to excitement or submissive urination. I advised the owner not to let her greet them on coming home. Otherwise, this "inability to control urine" would persist.
I wonder whether this is a case of submissive urination since the puppy did receive some spanking as part of toilet training?
