440. How to paper train when the puppy is crated?

Toilet Training Your First Puppy in Singapore

"How do we paper-train the puppy inside the wire crate with pee pan?" the young Indian expatriate couple living in a city condo asked. The puppy just shreds the newspapers which were placed on the floor of the wire crate.

Many puppies do shred newspapers or the puppy training pads. The owner of such a puppy lets the puppy out as he whines all the time. When let out, the puppy pees and poops all over the apartment.

What's the solution?

I asked a puppy seller after vaccination at his pet shop yesterday, March 28, 2007. I look forward to visiting this puppy seller in the countryside. It is a family business. A couple and a daughter.

I always try to tell the daughter how much she is loved as her dad. "Even your husband don't call you 'darling', I emphasised the fatherly love for this thirty something woman who speaks her mind about anybody including her parents. Over the years, the puppy seller was willing to share his secrets which could be revealed if I wrote a book.

The following are some of his opinions on toilet-training a new puppy when they have a wire crate with pee pan:

WIRE CRATE WITH PEE PAN (see picture).

1. Confine to the wire crate for a few days.
2. Food and water are inside the crate.
3. Say "good boy or good girl" when the puppy poops or pees inside the wire crate.
4. Plenty of praises. Maybe a food treat?
4. Take the puppy out after elimination.
5. Put him in when he is sniffing, circling or squatting as he wants to pee.
6. After a few days, the puppy will pee and poop inside the crate and eat and sleep on the other side.

REPORTS FROM OWNERS
1. Some puppies go straight to the bathroom floor to pee. So, the wire crate's door is left open 24 hours a day as the wire crate is the sleeping and eating area.

2. "Patience is the key to success", the pet shop owner emphasized. "It takes a lot of time. When there is an accident inside the apartment, it means that the owner has no patience (to do toilet training). Probably he means perseverance and consistency in toilet training.

HOW ABOUT PAPER-TRAINING?
Put the puppy urine or urine smell on the newspaper. Put the puppy onto it. He will be paper trained.

"I have a method to make the male dog pee on newspaper," the puppy seller said.
I did not ask him as I knew it was his trade secret. Maybe another time.

"I will be sending you an invoice (for receiving toilet training information)," the daughter repeated. I was stone deaf. Her big Doberman had gone to sniff a customer (a pale young lady hairdresser with black eyelashes and tinted brown hair) who was buying 2 Maltese puppies. The young lady put up her hands as the Doberman sniffed at her mid rib.

She could not scream nor get out of the corner. But the Doberman was not an aggressive dog. "It is best to get the Doberman away from her," I said to the puppy seller. "Some young people are very frightened of big breeds." She was relieved when the Doberman was led away.
