9. The 5-month-old chihuahua still has "accidents"

Toilet Training Your First Puppy in Singapore.
Was it accidental or deliberate?

"Some-times he forgot and pees on the floor," the owner put the chihuahua on the examination table for his 3rd vaccination. The puppy had a generalised skin infection and vaccination was delayed till he was 5 months old. Excellent coat condition. Put on a bit of weight.

I asked about toilet-training for my research. He was most happy to let me know how he did it. "Just take a piece of newspaper with his urine smell and let him smell it. Tell him to go to the newspaper."

Can a dog really understand this procedure? The chihuahua was trembling on the chair when I took his pictures for the research report. He was frightened. Some chihuahuas do tremble when they have not met so many people. After a while, he stopped trembling.

Was it as simple as ABC to paper-train him? "You did not beat him when he peed all over the apartment?" I asked the owner. He laughed "Sometimes a pat on the backside."

"Does he always do his business on the paper?" I asked him.

"No, sometimes he forgets," the owner said.

In some dog books, accidents do happen. But this puppy is now 5 months old and will become an adolescent. "Does he prefer to pee on certain floor areas in the apartment?" I probed deeper into its behaviour.

Could this be due to the fact that there is a strong urine smell attracting him? He could not resist such smells and deliberately peed on the spots. Instinctively and irresistibly attracted to that area. Preferring such areas to the unsoiled newspapers as the papers have no marking smell. Dogs have such a strong sense of smell and we have to understand that.

What is the counter measure? I advised him to use vinegar:water 1:3 to neutralise the soiled floor tiles. Mopping with the usual home floor wash might not help. It will be interesting to follow up.
