10. Toilet-training cannot wait till later

Toilet Training Your First Puppy in Singapore

I was on the way to vaccinate the competitor's puppies. The pet shop assistant, a seventeen-year-old with a bun curled round a needle, like some of the airline stewardess came out of the shop and asked me to go in. I thought he was a tall girl as I seldom see boys with buns and needles. Boys with ear rings, with tatoos and with nose rings. Yes, I have seen them. But this boy was one of a kind and the army barber will make him a baldie when he goes in for national service full-time soon.

"Later," I waved my hand to him as I was in a hurry to rush back for the 3 p.m consultations.

When I stepped inside the pet shop expecting to vaccinate puppies, there was this sad-looking black "American" Cocker Spaniel. The owner was holding him on his shoulder. The puppy was hopping on 3 legs. Everytime I feel the left hind leg for fractures, he whines in great pain. The pain transmitted to the owner's heart.
Well, the pet shop's sofa was no proper place to examine this puppy.

The owner and I went back to the veterinary surgery. There, on the consultation table, the puppy was examined. The left hind toe is swollen 5 times, the owner pointed to it. It was noticeable. So, was there a fracture or not? The big bones were not fractured but there as a small fibula bone on the thigh.

It was best to wait for two days. In the meantime, the puppy ought to be confined. "Is he being paper-trained?" I asked the owner who is a mature student. "No," the owner said. "Wait till he grows up."

"It will be much harder to paper-train an older puppy," I advised. "Besides, there are 7 co-tenants in the house. They will not be too happy with the smells of urine. As the puppy grows up, there will be more stools and urine produced. He will not be tolerated."

The owner agreed to confine the puppy to begin paper training inside his bedroom. The pet shop operator had not advised him on toilet-training. It will be good if all pet shop operators have a book for first-timers, but costs may or may not be a factor in such recommendations.

Toilet training cannot wait for puppies, unlike human babies! The best age to toilet-train the puppy is between 8 - 12 weeks as its mind is blank and absorbs training well. The older the more resistant it is. It is unbelievable but true.
