11. Teaching new dogs old tricks?

Toilet Training Your First Puppy in Singapore
Teaching new dogs old tricks?

The man had golden hair strands in between chocolate brown hairs. His whole left arm was heavily tatooed with flowers and dragons. He wore camouflage trousers. I guessed he was a military man. His girl friend was conventional, I think.

His Golden Retriever was so well cared for that there was not one rash. Recently I had seen a few Golden Retriever puppies with skin rashes, elbow and even knee pimples. So, it was nice to see a perfectly cared for and groomed 4-month-old Golden Retriever puppy. She flopped on the consultation table, tired after a hectic day. Puppies seem to love this consultation table. It was cool and sleep seducing. Or they had a full day but they do need a lot of sleep.

"How do you paper-train this Golden Retriever?" I asked as I was doing research and had some time. The puppy was 70% toilet-trained, the owner said. In 7 days. That was very good.

"How do you do it? Do you use the leash method?"

"What is the leash method?"

"A leash restricts the puppy from wandering all over the house and trains her to go to the toilet area specified for her."

"It is cruel. Just put her in the kitchen and she went to the same place as the older Silkie Terrier." The newspaper was placed on that location. Well, this was the best way to paper train a puppy. Some other owners seem to have lots of problems. I guessed the kitchen area must have very strong urine smell as the owner had 2 older dogs.

"However," the young man said. "The Retriever would go elsewhere to pee if the papers are wet. He pees so many times a day, countless." I had no time to explain that all puppies would prefer to be clean if they have a choice or proper environment.

"How often he poos in a day?" I asked.

The girl friend said, "Five times."

I noted one piece of fence bought from the pet shop invoice. Now, why would he want to buy one piece of fence. Normally 4 pieces form a playpen (puppy pen). Well, the 3-foot fence is used as a baby gate to prevent the puppy from going upstairs. Definitely, this fence is less expensive than a baby gate. What a good idea.

The couple was very busy as most Singapore couples are. This was the 3rd vaccination and they had to go somewhere. I think this Golden Retriever will be most well looked after as the couple complained that Golden Retrievers and Siberian Huskies are being given up after they have had grown up and are not so cute.
