3. The driveway - puppy rushes to it first thing in the morning

Saturday July 31, 2005

A baby-boomer generation couple. 4-month-old black Schnauzer came in for 3rd vaccination. "Not fully paper-trained," the husband sighed when I enquired about toilet training. "He rushes out to the car driveway in the morning to pee and pass motion."

COMMENT
Singapore's terrace or townhouse layout. Driveway sufficient for one car. A small plot of garden on one side. In this case, only front quarter of the garden is grass. I presume the 3/4 is tiled.

The puppy is always attracted by urine smell. In this case, he does not soil the indoors. That is great. The problem is that the owner needs to park his car in the driveway. By rushing out, the puppy can control himself overnight.

SOLUTION.
Shift the toilet gradually to the grass patch which is 45 degrees to the toilet area on the driveway. How to do it?

1. I suggested soiling the adjacent area of the driveway, using newspapers placed over the urine and then placing over the enlarged adjacent area.

2. Put vinegar + water (1 part vinegar + 3 parts water) in a spray bottle to spray 50% of the present toilet area. Soil the adjacent area 50% and closer to the grass patch. The vinegar neutralises the ammonia odour. Over time, the toilet area is relocated to the grass patch.

3. Theory is good. But troublesome.

4. The wife suggested using the mop to soil the adjacent area. Now, that is a brilliant solution. I suggested using a new mop with vinegar to neutralise the older area.

5. Seems an excellent solution. The owners will feedback to me one month later. They seldom do. I must make a note to follow up.

COMMENTS ON COLOUR
The black Schnauzer does not look black enough. Will he grow up to be salt and pepper? He has some brown hairs. Owners do not mind.

2. Puppy Training Pads - Shredding

Shredding the puppy training pads.

Hi Doctor

need some advice.
My puppy is abt be six months old, and he is still not totally paper trained.
I tried using the puppy training pads, but he often chew on them till it tears... and before i know it, it can't be used anymore.
we had no choice but to use newspapers which we din like as it wl dirty the floor. how do i "prevent" him from chewing the training pads?

plse advise.

thanks

REPLY

No solution to chewing or shredding newspapers or training pads because the puppy has been caged a long time and is bored. It is also teething. Shredding of pads or papers is a very common complaint.

COMMENT

From the owner's point of view, the newspapers definitely blackens the puppy and the puppy training pads are ideal. The pads cost around $1.00 per pad and therefore seldom purchased or recommended by many puppy sellers at the pet shops.

There are solutions.

1. One commercial solution to prevent shredding of the puppy pad. There is a frame which is sold at some pet shops. This frame clips all four sides of the pad, so the puppy cannot move it.

2. Glue or tape the pads on the floor tiles. There are some pads sold with tapes to tape the pads down. These are commercially available.

3. There are frames which partially hold down the puppy training pads as in the picture shown here.

NOT TOILET TRAINED BY 6 MONTHS OF AGE
The best time to train the puppy when it is 3 - 4 months of age. At 6 months of age, the puppy is an adolescent and is harder to train.

It is difficult to know how the puppy is housed in this case.

In most of such cases, the puppy needs to be confined to a small area and time must be spent to paper train it. The feeding schedule must be regular e.g. 8 a.m and 6 p.m. The puppy usually needs to go to the toilet after eating. Use vingear 1 part to 3 parts water to neutralise all the urine smell on the floor tiles while strictly supervise the puppy (circling, sniffing) and bring it to the toilet area.

CRATE TRAINING. Refer to www.toapayohvets.com or books. This may be the best method for this 6-month-old puppy. The owner needs to take many days of leave to focus on training with praises or rewards.

1. Be Kind To Pets Book 1: Toilet-Training Your BNew Puppy in Singapore

TOILET TRAINING YOUR FIRST PUPPY IN SINGAPORE - A Be Kind To Pets Book, published by www.sinpets.com

I am Dr Sing Kong Yuen, a veterinarian and founder of Toa Payoh Vets, a small animal practice Singapore. More information is at www.toapayohvets.com

I hope to write a book on Toilet Training Your New Puppy for Singaporeans, based on real life experiences of Singapore's puppy owners. It is so boring reading manuals and the real cases will be of great interest to real puppy owners all over the world. In Singapore, younger puppy owners research more on the internet and forums. There are some owners who beat or threaten their puppies to go to the proper toilet location as advised by friends. I hope this book, based on my research with new puppy owners who share their knowledge, will be of use to all new puppy owners, especially apartment residents, all over the world, making them "Be Kind To Puppies" by proper training and becoming a pleasure to bond for life.

Beginning July 2005, whenever I have time, I will record the experiences of Singapore puppy owners who come to see me, usually for puppy vaccination. All are happy to share their experiences. It is such a pleasure to share the beginning of a beautiful relationship with the puppy and we all enjoy knowing the various habits and behaviours of the four-legged bundle of joy. Real cases are so fascinating compared to reading a how-to technical manual. They show the application and improvisation of the theories and this book will be of much use to many puppy owners all over the world.

I just need to discipline myself to find time to write down their practices immediately as there are several useful pointers missed if I delay writing. Sometimes I need inspiration but there is no muse. Sometimes, during lunch-time I will go to the brand new National Library Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, near Bugis subway to do some research and record the cases in this blog.

I hope more puppies have a better peaceful life if owners are educated. More pictures of BE KIND TO PETS community education are at www.toapayohvets.com. Although you can e-mail to me at judy@toapayohvets your pet health problems, it is very risky to diagnose via the internet and via telephone because we are at different wave-lengths in thinking what appears to be the problem with your pets. Therefore, it is best to consult your veterinarian if you want your pets to live longer.
